Housatonic Community College, located in Bridgeport, CT, is home to more than just classrooms and lecture halls. The Housatonic Museum of Art (HMA) stands out as a fully-fledged museum, a Bert Chernow Gallery, not just a few rooms designated for art on a community college campus. With an impressive collection of artwork displayed from floor to ceiling and a dedicated gallery space, it’s remarkable to see such a vibrant institution nestled within a community college setting.

Recently, HMA received a prestigious grant that enabled them to host a groundbreaking event: Art For All. This three-day event brought colleges from across the nation to HMA, highlighting the importance of bringing museums to community colleges everywhere. Art For All is part of a larger initiative aimed at establishing art museums on community college campuses nationwide, ensuring that access to the arts is available to all students, regardless of where they study.

Our mission was to build awareness and engagement that will result in participation in the event and also to engage with communities at the other schools coming in from across the nation to encourage participation throughout the country.  We immediately sprang into action, focusing on strategic planning, drafting, and content creation. First, we developed a timeline for releasing press materials to maximize engagement and, ultimately, drive attendance. Next, we crafted press releases designed for optimal impact, ensuring they would capture attention and encourage participation. To complement the press releases, we also designed eye-catching graphics that not only supported the messaging but could stand alone as effective promotional materials for the campaign.

The promotion of HMA x AFA unfolded in three distinct phases. First, we focused on informing the public about the event: what it was, when it would take place, and, importantly, that it was completely free. Next, we highlighted the event’s core mission—advocating for the establishment of museums on community college campuses nationwide. Finally, we turned our attention to event reminders, encouraging attendance and building excitement as the date approached. In the end, the Art For All event successfully met its goal of raising awareness for community college museums, proving to be a resounding success.
